Your 6 to 12 week visit
What to expect at your appointment
Your baby is growing and changing every day.

Having a baby can bring lots of new experiences, feelings and changes.
- Your health visitor will next visit you when your baby is between 6 to 12 weeks old.
- The visit is part of the Healthy Child Programme, a service for all families with babies and young children.
This page explains what to expect and includes information that you may find helpful at this stage.
Before your visit
- You do not need to do anything before your appointment. We will contact you to let you know when your Health Visitor will visit.
- We encourage all parents, caregivers and other important people in your baby’s life to be involved if they can.
Please have your baby’s Red Book ready for the visit.
During your visit
Your health visitor can talk with you about:
- feeding your baby and starting solid foods
- how your baby is growing and learning
- understanding what your baby is telling you
- keeping your baby safe while they sleep
- how you are feeling
- your relationship with your baby
- local groups, activities and support
This is also a good time to talk about your baby’s immunisations and what to expect.
If you have questions about your babies crying, feeding, sleep or settling your baby, our 0 to 19 team can offer advice and support.

We will also ask to see where your baby sleeps.
We do this with all families so we can talk about safe sleep and help make sure your baby’s sleep space is as safe as possible.
We are here to listen, support and work alongside you to help give your baby the best possible start in life.

As your baby grows, the next step will be thinking about starting solid foods when your baby is around 6 months old. We can help you understand the signs that your baby is ready and where to find trusted information and advice.
