Your new birth visit
What to expect at your appointment
Congratulations on the arrival of your baby

Our 0 to 19 service are here to support you and your family during your baby’s first weeks.
Your new birth visit takes place when your baby is 10 to 14 days old.

This visit is part of the Healthy Child Programme, a service for all families with babies and young children.
This page explains what to expect from your visit and includes information and support that you may find helpful during the early days with your baby.
Before your visit
You do not need to do anything before your new birth visit.
The 0 to 19 service will be told when your baby is born. We will contact you to let you know when your Health Visitor will visit.
We encourage all parents, caregivers and other important people in your baby’s life to be involved if they can.
Please have your baby’s Red Book ready for the visit.

If you have any questions you may want to make a note of them before we visit.
You might like to think about:
- any questions you have about your baby
- how you are getting to know your baby
- your relationship with your baby and time spent together
- how you are feeling physically and emotionally
- any help or support you or your family may need
During your visit
Your health visitor can talk with you about:
- feeding your baby
- your baby’s development
- safe sleep
- understanding what your baby is telling you
- your health and wellbeing
- building a close relationship with your baby
- finding local support and services
We ask all families some of the same questions about things like:
- smoking
- alcohol
- relationships
- life at home
Some of the questions are about personal topics and may feel sensitive.
We ask these questions with all families because they help us understand how things are going and whether there is any information, advice or support that may be helpful.

We will also ask to see where your baby sleeps. We do this with all families.
It gives us a chance to talk about safe sleep and share advice to help keep your baby as safe as possible.
We are here to listen, support and work alongside you to help give your baby the best possible start in life.
Helpful information and resources

Every baby is different, and feeding can take time to learn for both babies and parents.
Your midwife or health visitor can provide information and support for breastfeeding and responsive feeding. We can also talk about how babies tell us when they are hungry, full, tired or need comfort.

Babies communicate from birth.
As you spend time with your baby, you will start to learn what they are trying to tell you. Your baby may cry, look at you, make sounds or move their body to show what they need.
Responding to your baby’s signals helps them feel safe, loved and understood. It also helps you build a strong relationship together.
