What does whole setting approach mean?

Whole setting approach (WSA) means that we work with education settings to develop an approach where support for Mental Health and Wellbeing is central to the setting’s ethos and culture. This involves engaging with all members of staff, parents and learners to ensure that emotional wellbeing is a priority.

We aim for all settings to have a whole setting approach to mental health and wellbeing in order to identify difficulties earlier and prevent difficulties from becoming worse. By educating young people, parents and education staff about well-being we aim to reduce stigma and increase awareness around Mental Health and Wellbeing.

Each setting working with our team completes an annual self assessment. This includes an action plan of the education setting’s plans for the following year in collaboration with what our team can offer. This helps the setting to focus on key areas for development.

Ways in which we develop a whole setting approach

  • Having display boards with information about mental health support within schools
  • Delivering staff training on a range of mental health topics
  • Supporting the development of the PSHE curriculum
  • Delivering parental workshops on a range of mental health topics
  • Offering reflective practice support to education staff

In your school and education setting this may look like

  • Wellbeing assemblies for young people on topics such as, 5 ways to wellbeing.
  • Wellbeing workshops for young people on topics such as, anxiety, self-esteem and resilience
  • Group sessions focusing on specific well-being topics such as, anxiety and worry, self esteem, low mood and stress.
  • Well-being workshops for parents on a variety of topics such as, understanding and managing emotions, anxiety, resilience, low mood.

For further information on the topics offered by our team within education settings, please see the links below.
