Leeds MindMate Support Team
We are Mental Health Support Team in Leeds, known as MindMate Support Teams locally. We are an early intervention mental health service.
Introducing the MindMate Support Team
The service aims to improve access to support for children and young people, up to the age of 18 years old, in education settings across Leeds, to prevent any emotional wellbeing difficulties becoming harder to manage. We also support young people of the same age who are electively home educated and not on roll with a school. The MindMate Support Team is made up of registered professionals working as part of the National Mental Health Support Team project.
What do the MindMate Support Team do?
We work with staff in education settings across Leeds to help build environments where wellbeing is prioritised for all.
MindMate Support Teams have 3 core functions
- To give timely advice to school and college staff and liaise with external specialist services to help children and young people get the right support and stay in education.
- To support the senior mental health lead in each education setting to introduce and develop a whole setting approach to mental health.
- To deliver evidence-based low intensity cognitive behavioural therapy interventions for mild to moderate mental health issues within groups and individually.
How can I access support?
If you wish to access MindMate Support Team support, check whether you or your child attends one of the education settings we are working with (from the list below) and ask to speak to the designated mental health lead within school.
The designated mental health lead can then contact the team on your behalf using our “request for support” form and organise an education staff consultation.
If you or your child is not in one of these education settings please refer for emotional wellbeing support via MindMate SPA.

How can young people get support from the MindMate Support Team?
If the young person attends one of the education settings we offer support to, the Mental Health Lead within the school can contact our team using our “request for support” form.
With parent and carer consent we will then be able to offer a staff consultation in the first instance to discuss the concerns and create a shared plan of support for the young person. Find out more about education staff consultations on the link below.
When the MindMate Support Team may not be appropriate
MMST do not offer a crisis intervention and are not able to provide intervention where risk management is the main presenting problem (for example, suicidal intent or risk to others). MMST are able to offer information about which services a young person or setting can contact in an emergency utilising leaflets and conversations. However MMST should not be the first point of call when a young person is in crisis. In these situations useful information regarding supporting young people in crisis can be found on the MindMate: Urgent help webpage
We are a short-term service, therefore do not offer long term support. If you are looking for longer term support for a young person they can be referred through MindMate SPA
As a service we are unable to triage requests for neurodiversity assessments, these requests would go via the MindMate single point of access ND assessment for school aged children
Is the service confidential?
Yes! Young people’s information is kept private and confidential, but we do share some things with the education setting unless asked not to. This will usually include letting them know when this support finishes.
