Safe bathing for babies and toddlers
Bath times are fun, interactive and a great time for play and exploring for both baby, toddler and adult. Following these simple rules will help keep them safe.
Bath time safety
Remember the “DUCK”
D: Do plan ahead
- Before you start running the bath, get everything you need ready.
- Keep towels, soap, toys and clothes close by so you don’t need to leave the bathroom.
- You can use a family bath or a baby bath.
U: Use touch supervision
- Always keep a hand on your child and never leave them alone, not even for a moment.
- It is easy to get distracted by a phone call, doorbell or another child.
- A few seconds without supervision is enough for a child to slip, breathe in water or drown.
C: Check the water
Before placing your baby or toddler in the bath:
- Check the temperature with your elbow, the water should feel warm, not hot.
- Gently mix the water so there are no hot spots.
- Check the depth:
- Babies 0 to 6 months: 5 to 10 cm of water.
- Older babies and toddlers: Water level should be no higher than hip‑height when they are sitting.
K: Keep your child safe
Make sure anyone else who bathes your child knows these safety steps too. Sharing the same simple rules helps keep your baby safe every time.
Use the DUCK steps at every bath time to keep your baby or toddler safe.
