We are part of the integrated children additional needs service. We provide specialist nursing care for children and young people. We work closely with families, schools, and other health and social care professionals to support each child. We are a team of healthcare support workers, registered nurses, a community play therapist, and health visitors (specialist community public health nurses).
What we offer
Clinic nursing
Clinic nurses support to our community paediatricians this involves weighing and measuring children invited into our clinics, undertaking medical investigations as requested by the community paediatricians this can include taking children’s blood pressure, urine and blood tests. We offer support to those children who may need additional considerations to access our services this may include longer appointments, or increased support prior to or during the appointment, for example, for blood tests where we invite you to complete a questionnaire prior to your child’s first blood taking appointment.
We work alongside the community paediatricians to complete a 4 year developmental assessment for babies born pre term (under 26 weeks).
We support families of children who are known to the ICAN service following a new prescription of melatonin by ICAN paediatrician and advanced clinical practitioner.
ICAN community nursing
We work alongside our community paediatricians to support children and young people with constipation.
The ICAN community nurse offers a nurse led specialist support clinic for children over 5 years of age where persistent day time wetting is the primary concern.
ICAN health visitors (specialist community public health nurses)
ICAN health visitors work on the growth and nutrition, complex developmental assessment and the pre school autism needs led pathways.
We complete triage, nursing assessments and timely interventions for children referred for nursing support under these pathways.
We provide parent workshops and support to children and their families referred under the pre-school autism needs led pathway.
Who it is for
The majority of the children that we see are young children (pre-school), however some of our services are available for children and young people up to the age of 19 who are registered with a Leeds GP.
