Important information after your minor gynaecology procedure
The aim of this page is to give you information on what to expect after you’ve had a minor gynaecology procedure, such as cautery of the cervix, removal of a cervical polyp, or a biopsy or skin tag removal from the vulva.
How will I feel after treatment to the cervix?
- It is normal to have some abdominal discomfort, which may continue for 24 to 48 hours, or sometimes up to a week.
- Take pain killers at regular intervals, place a hot water bottle over your stomach if needed and try not to do anything too strenuous.
Bleeding and sanitary products after treatment to the cervix
- You may have some bleeding or brown or grey discharge after cautery or biopsy, which is normal. Use a pad for this.
- Do not use tampons and menstrual cups for this.
- Do not have sex until the bleeding or discharge has stopped.
- Seek medical advice if you develop any offensive or smelly discharge or heavy bleeding.
Wound care after vulval biopsy or skin tag removal
- We advise you wear large, supportive underwear on the day of your procedure.
- If you required any stitches these will dissolve by themselves.
- You will have a dressing over the wound and be given a pad to hold this in place. Try and avoid going to the toilet for at least 40 minutes after the procedure, to keep the dressing on.
- Once the dressing falls off this does not need to be replaced.
- Do not wash until the next day. When you wash the vulva ensure you gently dry the skin afterwards.
- Seek medical advice if you develop any pus or heavy bleeding from the wound.
When will I get my histology results?
- If any samples were sent to histology to be checked, we will write to you and your GP with the results.
- It can take several months in some cases before we receive the results from the lab, but if you are concerned that you have not heard anything please call us on the number above.
