What we expect from you

Before an appointment

We can work most effectively when key information and arrangements are in place. The following expectations help us understand your resident’s needs and ensure that our recommendations are carried out safely.

Communication and awareness

• Ensure all relevant staff know the appointment is taking place.
• Inform the resident’s next of kin (NOK) and (or) Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA).
• Let the SLT team know if they wish to be present or receive an update afterwards.

Resident preparation

• The resident should have received personal care.
• Ensure they are as alert and upright as possible.
• Provide a quiet, low‑distraction space for the assessment.

Food, drink and equipment (swallowing assessments)

• Inform the therapist of any allergies, intolerances or aversions.
• Make a range of suitable food textures and drinks available, such as:
  • banana, soft cake, cream or custard, yoghurt, biscuits, bread
  • drinks in open cups
  • teaspoons

Staffing

• Ensure a staff member who knows the resident is available throughout the assessment if needed.

Medical and background information

Provide staff who can share essential information, including:

For swallowing assessments

• Diagnoses and relevant medical history
• Recent chest infections
• Current diet and fluid textures
• Weight and BMI
• Whether or when coughing occurs
• Level of support needed for eating and drinking
• Any specific concerns

For communication assessments

• Diagnoses
• Usual communication methods
• Any communication aids or devices
• Any recent changes in communication

If you cannot meet these expectations, please contact the Speech and Swallowing team before the appointment to discuss and reschedule if necessary.
