Community gynaecology

During your time on your GOSH placement at Leeds Community Healthcare, there will be a limited number of placements available to you within one of our Community Gynaecology clinics.

These clinics are in addition to your scheduled 1.5 days at our Sexual Health sites and provide an amazing opportunity to gain additional insight into and experience of a community gynaecology clinic. As well as giving you more opportunities to receive sign offs and obtain patient histories, patients at these clinics attend on a referral only basis and often present with conditions which may not be seen during your time at other LCH clinics.

Learning outcomes and objectives

Leeds Sexual Health

You will have time allocated to the Beeston clinic and, hopefully, to one of our spoke sites. During this time, we want you to have the opportunity to observe patients attending with a variety of sexual health and contraception needs, take male and female sexual histories and explore contraception counselling.
You will be allocated a supervisor for each half-day session, who may be a doctor or a nurse.

Community gynaecology

Community gynaecology clinics provide an amazing opportunity to gain additional insight and experience, as well as giving you more time to receive sign offs and obtain patient histories.

Induction and intro week

Leeds Sexual Health and community gynaecology are topics are featured from Wednesday to Friday in the GOSH introduction week. To see the associated learning materials for these sessions please visit the VLE.

Clinic descriptors

You will attend integrated sexual health clinics (for both GU and contraception health needs).

The clinics are based in community sites.

Most clinics will be booked with a range of ages, and a mixture of presentations, including those with symptoms, those seeking contraception, those coming for STI prevention or sexual health advice. You may see a dedicated young person’s clinic (for U18 years), or a contraception procedure clinic for coils and implants.

Please check the VLE for intro week lectures and additional learning videos.

  • You can also register for eLearning for health with your university email address in order to access interactive teaching materials within the ‘eSTI-HIV’ module ( E-LFH)
  • Please check the VLE for example videos of male pelvis examination and sexual history taking
  • We are a close-knit team of doctors and nursing staff. Our senior nurses are highly skilled and have undergone additional training in sexual health so please learn from them and ask any questions you have.

If you cannot attend or are running late, please follow your normal university absence reporting procedures (for example, recording your absence on Minerva) as well as contacting the placement host. Preferably do this before your placement is due to start so that clinicians don’t delay the start of their clinic waiting for you.
