School hearing screening
As part of the School Health Surveillance Programme, all children in Year 1 are offered a hearing screen at school.
The hearing screen is carried out by trained staff from the Community Audiology Service Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust.
What does the hearing screen involve?
The hearing screen is quick and simple. Your child will be asked to play a listening game while wearing headphones over their ears.
They will listen for different sounds and respond by putting a brick in a box when they hear them.
The screening helps to identify children who may have a hearing problem that needs further investigation.
The Screening team will ask your child’s school for:
- Your child’s name
- Date of birth
- Address
- telephone number
We will only use these details if we need to contact you about your child’s hearing screen.
When will I find out the result?
After your child’s hearing has been screened we will write to you with the result.
If your child does not pass the hearing screen, we will contact you to arrange a more detailed hearing assessment at a local health centre.
What if my child is not in school?
If your child is absent from school on the day the hearing screening takes place, we will write to you to let you know and provide information about what happens next.
If you have any questions about your child’s hearing screening, please contact the School Hearing Screening team.

Important information
Carrying out a hearing test on a child with a shunt (a surgically implanted device in the brain) may lead to a life-threatening situation. If your child has a shunt, please contact us as soon as possible. We can then arrange for your child to have a different type of hearing test in one of our clinics.
If you do not want us to check your child’s hearing, please contact us on the above telephone number or email to let us know.
