Constipation pathway
Our constipation pathway is a paediatrician-led service, supported by a specialist ICAN nurse, designed to provide comprehensive assessment and management for children with constipation.
Nurse first appointment
Your child’s journey begins with a nurse first appointment, where an ICAN community nurse will carry out a comprehensive continence assessment.
During this appointment, the nurse will:
- work closely with your GP to stabilise your child’s constipation, including supporting the use of prescribed laxatives
- provide tailored education on healthy bladder and bowel habits
- support you and your child in establishing effective toileting routines
- offer guidance on optimising laxatives and fluid intake
- help you understand how to manage your child’s toileting needs confidently at home.
Ongoing support
Our nurse-led support extends beyond the clinic. We aim to ensure a joined-up approach to care by:
- working with schools and other services involved in your child’s care
- supporting consistent routines across all environments
- ensuring everyone involved understands how best to support your child.
We also provide signposting to additional support services, so you can access further help where needed.
Medical assessment
Where appropriate, your child may be assessed by an ICAN paediatrician to:
- assess for any underlying medical conditions
- confirm that constipation is the primary cause of symptoms
- guide further treatment if needed
Our approach
The constipation pathway focuses on a holistic, evidence-based approach, combining:
- behavioural strategies to support healthy bowel habits
- medication management, including prescribed laxatives
- family education and empowerment
- referral to specialist or tertiary services where necessary
Our aim is to help your child become comfortable, symptom-free, and confident in managing their bowel health.
