This page gives simple, practical advice to help older children and teenagers look after their teeth and to guide parents and carers in supporting them.
Why looking after your teeth matters

Your teeth need to last your whole life, so looking after them makes a big difference and helps you to:
- feel confident when you smile
- keep your breath fresh
- avoid toothache
- avoid fillings and injections
- protect your adult teeth
Looking after your teeth
Here’s what you need to do:
- brush your teeth twice a day, before bed and one other time
- Brush for 2 minutes
- Use fluoride toothpaste (check the tube for 1000ppm or more)
- Use a pea-sized amount
- Spit, don’t rinse, rinsing washes away the fluoride that protects your teeth

Tips to make brushing easier
- Use a toothbrush that feels comfortable for you (soft or medium).
- Brush in small circles to clean each tooth and gums properly.
- Play a 2‑minute song while brushing.

Sugar can harm teeth, so it is important to limit sugary foods and drinks.
Government guidance for daily sugar limits
Guidance for children aged 11+:
- No more than 30g of sugar a day (about 7 sugar cubes)
Tips:
- Avoid sugary snacks and drinks (including fruit juice).
- Water and milk are the best drinks.
- Encourage drinking from open cups rather than bottles or straws.
- Ask for a sugar‑free version if you need medicine.

- The dentist is free until you are 18.
- You should go for a check-up twice a year.
- Dentists are there to help, not judge.
- If you’re worrying about anything, tell them, they can explain what will happen.
Fluoride varnish and fissure sealants
- You may be offered fluoride varnish or sealants to protect your teeth.
- They help stop decay and keep your teeth strong.
- Ask your dentist or parent if you’re not sure whether you’ve had them.
