/Our services (A to Z)/Pain service/Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia

Between 20 to 30% of referrals to our service are for the management of Fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia has many symptoms, but the main 3 symptoms are:

  1. Widespread body pain, pain may move around the body, you may feel strange sensations like numbness, pins and needles, burning, shooting pains, your skin may be painful to touch
  2. Fatigue (tiredness), waking feeling unrefreshed even after a good night sleep
  3. Poor memory, difficulty getting the right words out

The Royal college of Physicians (2022) have developed a diagnostic worksheet to identify people with symptoms of Fibromyalgia:

  • Fibromyalgia syndrome diagnostic worksheet

Other health conditions can cause similar symptoms to fibromyalgia, such as menopause, hypothyroidism and inflammatory conditions, therefore if you suspect you have Fibromyalgia you need to discuss this with your GP.

Who can diagnose Fibromyalgia?

Your GP. Our service can also use the guide above as part of the diagnosis.
