Start brushing your baby’s teeth as soon as they get their first tooth.
Brush teeth for two minutes twice a day, at bedtime and one other time in the day.
You can use adult fluoride toothpaste containing more than 1000ppm fluoride.
Help your child to clean their teeth properly until they are at least 7 years old.
Spit out after brushing but don’t rinse, fluoride toothpaste is good for your mouth.
Avoid snacks and drinks containing sugar, including fruit juices.
Milk and water are the best drinks for children.
From six months of age, children should drink from an open or free-flow cup.
Ask your dentist about fluoride varnish, all children over 3 years should have this applied to their teeth.
Take your child to the dentist regularly as soon as they get their first tooth. NHS dental care is free for under 18s.
