Guide to frequency of performing intermittent self-catheterisation and intermittent catheterisation

Attempt to pass urine normally prior to using the intermittent catheter

  • Unable to void:
    • On average perform ISC
    • 4 to 5 times a day
    • Approximately 3 hourly from waking to retiring
  • Drained volume greater than 500ml: Perform ISC 3 to 4 time a day
  • Drained volume 300 to 500ml: 2 to 3 times a day
  • Drained volume 150 to 300ml: 1 to 2 times a day
  • Drained volume less than 150ml: Once a day
  • Drained volume <100ml on 3 consecutive occasions: Stop and reassess. May only need to undertake weekly and then reassess or discuss with HCP
